A truly remarkable document was published last week. It is an open letter, signed by 1,376 engineers and other experts who work on “frontier AI” — that is, cutting-edge artificial intelligence — at the leading AI companies, such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.

Their ask is very simple: Slow down the development of AI models until humans ensure that these models can be controlled.

They explain that there is “a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems. To realize AI’s potential, industry, government, and society at large may need the option to buy time to address emerging risks, develop security measures, and strengthen oversight.”
